Abstract

A composition for flame-proofing cellulosic materials comprises a polyvinyl halide-containing latex; a resinous precondensate formed by the reaction of tetrakis (hydroxy methyl) phosphonium chloride, urea, and formaldehyde; and antimony oxide. The components may be dispersed in a C1- 6 aliphatic alcohol, e.g. isopropyl alcohol. The composition may contain 10-55% wt. solids, and may also contain up to 3% wt. of each of a protective colloid, e.g. hydroxyethyl cellulose, and a catalyst, e.g. citric acid. Flame-retardant paper may be formed by impregnating the paper with the composition and drying; the resin add-on may be, e.g. 20-40% by wt.ALSO:Flame-retardant paper is formed by impregnating the paper with a composition comprising a polyvinyl halide containing latex, a resinous precondensate formed by the reaction of tetrakis (hydroxy methyl) phosphonium chloride, urea, and formaldehyde; and antimony oxide; and drying. The composition components may be dispersed in a lower aliphatic alcohol, e.g. isopropyl alcohol. The composition may contain 10-55% wt. solids, and may also contain up to 3% wt. of each of a protective colloid, e.g. hydroxyethyl cellulose, and a catalyst, e.g. citric acid. The resin add-on to the paper may be e.g. 20-40% wt.
