Abstract

Paper containing a proportion of man-made fibres is made by forming an aqueous suspension which contains the man-made fibres and an amineformaldehyde precondensate, forming a web from the suspension, drying it, impregnating the dried web with an aqueous-alcoholic solution containing a linear copolyamide of high molecular weight, and drying the impregnated sheet. The fibres may be of polyhexamethyleneadifamide or viscose rayon, and these may be mixed with one another or with natural cellulose fibres. The precondensate may be a cation-active trimethylolmelamine. The suspension may also contain a salt of a polyvalent metal, e.g. aluminium sulphate. The impregnating solution may also contain a cross-linking agent such as 1 : 6-hexamethylene-N : N1-bis-(ethyleneurea) or a formaldehyde donor, and/or a hydrophobilising agent such as octadecylethyleneurea. It may also contain a salt that develops acid properties at higher temperatures, e.g. aluminium nitrate or zinc nitrate. The impregnated web may also be hot-calendered, embossed or pleated. The product is ink-fast, has a high wet-strength, and is stable to dilute acids, alkalis and organic solvents such as benzene, alcohol and trichlorethylene. Specifications 874,249, 948,750, and German Specification 800,740 are referred to.
