Abstract

A method of impregnating textile fabric containing at least 50% of regenerated cellulosic fibres with an aqueous mixture capable of forming a urea-formaldehyde resin in presence of acid, together with a catalyst which is an ammonium salt of an acid having a pk<3, drying the fabric so that it contains 4 to 25% by weight of moisture calculated on the dry weight of the fabric, allowing the fabric to stand in ambient temperature for example from 48 to 96 hours and under such conditions that it retains moisture between the limits of 4 to 25% by weight for a sufficient time for resin formation to take place, and then drying the fabric. The preferred catalyst is ammonium thiocyanate and preferably the fabric contains 10 to 25% by weight of moisture. The fabric may be pleated or, creased or a garment made from it whilst it is in the moist state and before resin formation takes place, and then the fabric is washed to remove catalyst residues after resin formation has taken place but before drying. Alternatively the catalyst residues are not removed and the fabric is pleated or creased after resin formation has taken place. The impregnated textile fabric may be 100% viscous rayon or fabric containing at least 50% viscous rayon, the remainder being synthetic, substantially non-water-absorbent fibre.
