Abstract

Paper-like material comprising synthetic fibres is made from an aqueous suspension containing the fibres which have a coating of a watersoluble N-ethoxylated polyamide. The polyamide may be a polycaproamide or a copolyamide of epsilon-aminocaprolactam and hexamethylenediamine adipate, and may be ethoxylated to a degree corresponding to 8 to 12 mols of ethylene oxide per gram atom of nitrogen. The synthetic fibres may be of a polyamide, a polyurethane, a polyester, a homopolymer or copolymer of vinyl acetate, a homopolymer or copolymer of acrylonitrile or polytetrafluoroethylene. The fibres may be coated by treating them with an aqueous solution of the N-ethoxylated polyamide, and may then be dried before being formed in the suspension from which the paper-like material is made. The suspension may contain natural, e.g. cellulose, or modified natural polymer, e.g. p regenerated cellulose, fibres as well as the synthetic fibres. The suspension is formed into paper-like materials by means known in the paper-making art, e.g. on a Fourdrinier machine. Specification 868,651 is referred to.
