Abstract

A sheet material, capable of being heat sealed to other articles and from which labels or tabs may be cut, comprises a flexible support having a coating of thermoplastic material consisting substantially of a copolymer of vinylidene chloride in which the vinylidene chloride content lies about 50%, preferably between 70 and 95%, and a plasticizer in an amount of up to about 15% by weight of the copolymer. The copolymer may be of vinylidene chloride with an acrylate, acrylonitrile or vinyl chloride. The plasticizer may be a dialkyl phthalate, e.g. dioctyl phthalate. The support may be a woven or knitted fabric, e.g. a cotton fabric, a fibrous material with random arrangement of the fibres, eg. paper, or a continuous foil, e.g. regenerated cellulose. Specifications 561,989, 644,119, 650,910, 668,305, 735,236, 735,280 and 882,521 are referred to.ALSO:A sheet material, capable of being heat sealed to other articles and from which labels or tabs may be cut, comprises a flexible support impregnated with a thermoplastic material consisting substantially of a copolymer of vinylidene chloride in which the vinylidene chloride content lies about 50%, preferably between 70 and 95%, and a plasticizer in an amount of up to about 15% by weight of the copolymer. The copolymer may be of vinylidene chloride with an acrylate, acrylonitrile or vinyl chloride. The plasticizer may be a dialkyl phthalate e.g. dioctyl phthalate. The support may be a woven or knitted fabric e.g. a cotton fabric, a fibrous material having a random arrangement of fibres e.g. paper, or a continuous foil e.g. of regenerated cellulose. A sheet material is described which consists of a fabric structure formed in part of non-thermoplastic yarns e.g. cotton, and in part of yarns of the copolymer substantially without plasticizer. The sheet material, which may be used as an interlining material, may comprise a fabric of symmetrical character providing for a similar degree of exposure of the copolymer yarns on the two faces of the fabric, or the copolymer yarns may be predominantly or exclusively exposed on one surface.
