Abstract

911,211. Pyroxylin coated fabric. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. June 16, 1961 [July 19, 1960], No. 21821/61. Class 140. A sheet material comprising a fibrous sheet has in adherence therewith a base coat comprising a copolymer of 94-99% by weight of at least one of the methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid and 1-6% by weight of acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic acid or mixtures thereof, and in superposed adherence with the base coat, a coat containing pyroxylin as the principal film former. The copolymer may contain 80-90% by weight ethyl acrylate, 4-20 % by weight methyl methacrylate and 1-6% by weight methacrylic acid. The base coat may be a smooth continuous layer which completely bridges the interstices of the fibrous substrate which may be paper, or a woven, knit or non-woven textile fabric of natural or synthetic, organic or inorganic, staple or continuous filament, e.g. cotton. The base coat may contain a stiffening resin, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, polymethyl methacrylate, or a vinyl or vinylidene chloride resin such as the copolymers thereof with vinyl acetate or diethyl maleate. The stiffening resin: acrylic copolymer weight ratio may be from 1 : 99 to 95 : 5. The stiffening resin may be polyvinyl acetate present in the weight ratio polyvinyl acetate : acrylic copolymer of 15 : 85 to 40 : 60. The pyroxylin coat may contain pigments, plasticizers and other film formers, e.g. drying oil, natural or synthetic resin, or oil modified resin. The copolymer may be applied to the fabric of organic textile fibres as an aqueous dispersion, the resultant base coat dried, and a layer of solution coating composition containing pyroxylin as the principal film former applied thereover and dried. A size coat may be applied to the back-side of the substrate before or after applying the base coat, or after applying the pyroxylin coat. A final protective coat of non-pigmented and non-plasticized pyroxylin composition or a synthetic interpolyamide composition may be applied. The coated fabric may be embossed and is particularly useful as a book cover material. Specification 829,674 is referred to.
