Abstract

1349934 Coated products IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 June 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 39102/70 Addition to 1294173 Heading B2E White coatings are obtained from substrates by applying to the substrate a coating composition comprising white pigment extender, synthetic latex as sole binding agent, an optical binding agent and water and subsequently applying a non-ionic surfactant to the coated substrate. The coated substrate may be dried before the after-treatment. The pigment extender may be china clay, whitening barytes, satin-white or titanium dioxide. The synthetic latex may be a carboxylated butadiene/styrene copolymer, butyl acrylate/styrene copolymer, butyl acrylate/vinyl acetate copolymer and butadiene / methyl methacrylate copolymer. Numerous suitable optical brighteners are listed. The substrate may be paper, board, films, textile fibres, non-woven materials or building materials. The coatings may be applied by air knife, blade, brush, roller or bar coating methods.
