887,734. Coated bitumen impregnated felt. TAYSIDE FLOORCLOTH CO. Ltd. Jan. 15, 1960 [Jan. 30, 1959], No. 3431/59. Class 140. Floor and wall coverings are manufactured by applying to one face of a bitumen-impregnated felt base a backing paint to prevent the bitumen marking the decorative face when the covering is rolled up, applying to the other face a facing paint to impart thereto a smooth surface, applying to the latter face a barrier coating of a dried aqueous solution of casein together with a stable aqueous dispersion of particles of a copolymer of butadiene and methyl methacrylate, applying to the barrier coating by block or roller printing a coating of a vinyl resin selected from polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate or vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer incorporating suitable pigments, and then subjecting the coated impregnated base to such temperatures as is necessary to gell the vinyl resin. The barrier coating may have applied thereto a coating consisting solely of a stable aqueous dispersion of particles of a copolymer of butadiene and methyl methacrylate which may be dried by heating prior to the application of the vinyl resin coating. The backing paint may be of the oleo-resinous or water-emulsion type. The felt base may be produced in a paper machine by felting fibres such as rag, wood, animal or mineral fibres, and may have a thickness of from 0.20 to 0.08 inch.
