Abstract

851,315. Sound-insulating fibre-board. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. June 17, 1958 [June 18, 1957 (3)], No. 19319/58. Class 96. A sound-insulating tile is formed from a dried, water-laid fibre-board made of vegetable fibres, mineral wool, or glass wool, by pressing blunt-nosed projections into the front surface to displace material and leave irregularly-shaped elongated openings 1 lined with loosely-felted fibres. The blunt projections may be on the surfaces of a succession of cylinders or on a platen of a punch-press which may be so arranged that the openings 1 are not at right angles to the surface of the fibre-board. Smaller, regularly-shaped openings may be pressed in, between the elongated openings 1, e.g. using blunt pins. A dark dye may be applied before forming the openings I, and thereafter the surface may be coated with a lighter colour. The back of the tile may be embossed to have small, regular, elongated depressions at right-angles to the general direction of the openings 1. Adjacent tiles 7, 8 may be arranged with the openings 1 at right-angles.
