618,178. Fabrics composed of fibres agglutinated by adhesives. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Oct. 30, 1946, No. 32264. Convention date, Jan. 23, Addition to 608,753. [Class 140] Coherent batting made by a process which comprises wetting with water alone a layer of interlaced and matted staple fibres, some or all of which are thermoplastic, and forming a skin on both sides of the said layer by causing the thermoplastic fibres at or near the surfaces of said layer to become adhesive and stick to one another by the action of heat and pressure, while leaving unaffected the thermoplastic fibres in the body of the layer. The batting may be composed of thermoplastic fibres of cellulose esters or ethers, synthetic linear polyamide condensation products, polymeric vinyl compounds such as polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, polymerized vinylidene chloride and polymerized methacrylic esters such as polymethyl methacrylate or the batting may include fibres of material such as cotton, silk, wool, regenerated cellulose, jute, hemp or asbestos mixed with the thermoplastic fibres. The water may be applied to the interlaced fibres as a fine spray. The heat and pressure may be applied by heated calender rolls.
