Abstract

1,244,402. Non-woven fabric. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 7 Feb., 1969 [9 Feb., 1968], No. 6741/69. Heading D1R. A bonded non-woven fabric of 80-95% of fibrous cellulosic material of which 5-20% consists of fibres longer than ¢" the remainder consists of fibrous material having a length shorter than ¢", and at least 15% wt. of the fibres shorter than ¢" consisting of wood flow. The fabric has a dry tensile strength of no less than 1.35 per inch width, a wet tensile strength of no less than 0.61 per inch width, a stiffness of no more than 7.0 cm for a web based on fibrous material of 3 ozs per sq. yard. The fibrous cellusic material may be wood pulp, cotton linters or staple rayon. The fabric can be made by applying wood flow to the surface of an air laid cellulosic fibre web, covering with a second cellulosic fibre web and feeding the composite web to another air-laying webforming apparatus. The binder can be a selfcuring acrylic latex applied as a solution or dispersion which is sucked into the web or is applied by a spray or mangle. The web can be heated to dry and cure the binder. The web can be compacted, embossed, be treated with a rewetting agent such as sulphonated alkyl ester, have spaced lines of binder applied to its surface or have a veneer of fibres bonded to its surface.
