Abstract

833,697. Agglutinated fibrous fabrics; paper. DRELICH, A. H., and GRISWOLD, H. W. Jan. 11, 1957 [Jan. 11, 1956], No. 1185/57. Drawings to Specification. Classes 96 and 140. A washable non-woven fabric, e.g. paper, comprising a layer of overlapping, intersecting fibres and a water-resistant binder material distributed in a multiplicity of very small areas of the layer in accordance with a predetermined pattern and bonding together fibres passing through the areas, the average size of the areas being at least 0.000012 square inches and not more than 0.0028 square inches, and the distance between adjacent areas being not less than 0.01 inches and not more than 0.06 inches and the proportions of binder to fabric being such that the fabric is washable and has a degree of softness and absorbency not substantially inferior to that of the fibre layer without the binder material. Natural fibres of animal or vegetable origin and artificial fibres may be used. Specified fibres are viscose rayon, cotton, nylon, cellulose acetate and woodpulp. Specified binders are polyvinylacetate, -chloride, -butyral, -formal, polyvinyl alcohol, together with formaldehyde- or dimethylol-urea and a catalyst, co-polymers of butadiene with acrylonitrile and/or styrene, co-polymers of polyvinyl acetate with lower alkyl acrylates, polymethane, polyethylene, ethyl cellulose, nylon and cellulose acetate. The fabric of the invention is made by depositing the binder in small areas on the layer of fibres and then treating the binding material to bond together the fibres. The binder in the binder areas may be particulate or solid or in the form of partially solid porous masses; it may be deposited by printing a resin in melt form or an adhesive in solution or an aqueous dispersion of a resinous adhesive, or by depositing dry binder particles in spaced areas and then fusing them under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure. The fibrous layer itself may be formed by carding, gametting, air-laying or paper-making methods. Individual layers formed by one or more of these techniques may be laminated to provide a thicker layer for conversion into the fabric of the invention. Specification 804,852 is referred to.
