Abstract

1432978 Laminates UMA SEISHI KK 10 April 1973 17271/73 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions D1 and A5] A disposable non-woven filamentary structure suitable for use in the production of napkins comprises (A) a dry-formed web having a weight of not more than 60 grams per square metre and consisting of 30-100% by weight of polyolefin staple fibres and 0-70% by weight of cellulosic staple fibres, and (B) a wet-formed web having a weight of not more than 30 grams per square metre and consisting of 0-50% by weight of polyolefin staple fibres and 50-100% by weight of cellulosic staple fibres, the wetformed web being bonded by means of less than 15% by weight based on the total weight of staple fibres contained therein of a binder, and the webs (A) and (B) being bonded together by means of the fused portions of the polyolefin staple fibres contained in the webs, the fused portions being disposed in spaced relation from each other so that the area of diffusion of the structure measured by a test, details of which are given, is not greater than 1À0 square centimetre. The dry-formed web A which may be produced on a carding machine may be such that the staple fibres thereof are anisotropically oriented, the fused portions being formed in spaced relations from each other in a direction traversing the anisotropic orientation. The polyolefin fibres may be of polypropylene, polyethylene or ethylene-propylene copolymers, the cellulosic fibres may be cotton, bast fibres, wood pulp, kapok, viscose rayon or cellulose acetate rayon and the binder in the wet-formed web may be water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol or ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer in the form of fibres. The structure may comprise a plurality of the webs (A) and (B). Bonding may be effected by passing superposed webs (A) and (B) between a hot embossing roll and a woollen paper roll comprising wool wound tightly on to a roll or paper, with web (B) in contact with the hot roll.
