Abstract

1,171,941. Non-woven fabric; paper. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 1 Nov., 1966 [17 Nov., 1965], No. 48954/66. Headings D2B and D1R. A nonwoven fabric of improved wet strength comprises 25-95% cellulose fibres (i.e. cotton or regenerated cellulose fibres) and 5-75% partially fused polypropylene fibres in bonding relationship therewith. The polypropylene fibres are distributed throughout the cellulose fibres but substantial areas of the cellulose fibres are free of partially fused polypropylene fibres whereby the fabric has absorbency for liquids. The bonded polypropylene fibres may cover no more than 20% of the fabric surface. The polypropylene fibres are generally ¢-2" long and 1-5 denier. The regenerated cellulose fibres can be rayon. The mixed fibrous web can be formed by carding, air-laying or waterlaying, or by sprinkling polypropylene fibres on or between cellulose fibre webs. The fibres in the web may be aligned. The polypropylene fibres can be uniformly distributed or may be in an intermitted pattern. The polypropylene fibres can be fused by heating to 325-400‹C by infra-red radiation, in an oven or by hotcalendering at 2-20 lbs/linear inch. The bonded web can be passed through chilled rolls to cool it. The specification also discloses: in Example III a cotton web bonded by sprinkling polypropylene powder to the web and hot-calendering; in Example V a web formed of a mixture of cotton and Vinyon fibres bonded by hot-calendering, in Example VI or cotton web bonded with hydroxyethyl cellulose.
