Abstract
1,246,910. Diapers. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 16 May, 1969 [16 May, 1968], No. 25029/69. Heading A3V. [Also in Divisions Dl and D2] A disposable diaper, Figs. 8 and 9, comprises an absorbent pad 31 of wood pulp located between two wider sheets 29, 30 each comprising a bonded non-woven fabric formed of 75-98% cellulosic short fibres having a length of less than 1/4 inch, the remainder being cellulosic long fibres of a length greater than 3/4 inch, and a binder having a viscosity of less than 5 centipoises prior to drying, the fabric having a weight of less than 8 ounces per square yard and a density of 0.15 to 0.05 grams per cubic centimetre. The sheet 30 is longer than the sheet 29 and its extending ends 32, 33 are folded over to form reinforced areas for receiving safety pins. Both the sheets 29, 30 may be absorbent, i.e. contain a rewetting agent, or only the sheet 29 and the pad 31 are absorbent. If desired, the side edges 36, 37 of the pad are secured by spot bonding. The diaper is folded as shown in Fig. 9 and the double folds are held by adhesive 41. The non-woven fabric is produced by depositing a uniform mixture of the short and long fibres, in a dry condition, on a moving foraminous screen or belt 13, Fig. 1. An excessive amount of binder, e.g. an acrylate or urethane polymer, is flowed onto the web from a dispenser 14. Excess binder is removed by a suction box 15 and the web 10 passes through a heating device 16 to dry the web and cure, without substanital compression of the fibres, the binder which is present in amounts of 1-30% of the weight of the fibres on a dry solids basis. The short fibres may be wood pulp or second cut cotton linters and the long fibres may be synthetic, e.g. rayon. One surface of the fabric may be embossed to improve the drap thereof. A fabric in which the surface fibres on one side have more loft than those on the other may be prepared as above but with a loose weave fabric separating the mixture of fibres into two layers. After passing through the heating device 16, the laminate is split into two layers and the loose weave fabric removed.
