Abstract

1,245,691. Diapers. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 16 Jan., 1969 [19 Jan., 1968], No. 2571/ 69. Heading A3V. [Also in Division A5] An absorbent pad 10 comprises a hydrophilic foamed polymer sheet 12 placed between a flexible moisture permeable facing 11 and a flexible backing 13 and having at least one surface in contact with a creped sheet (16 Fig. 2) of cellulosic fibres, the foamed sheet being enclosed around its edges by securing together the facing and backing sheets to prevent lateral extension when wet. The facing 11 may be of resin bonded nonwoven fabric and the backing 13 may be a water impervious film such as polyethylene. The latter film may also be laminated to flexible sheets of paper or fabric. The absorbent sheet 12 may be foamed polyurethane of about “ inch thickness. The crepe sheet (16) may be placed between the facing sheet and the polymer sheet (15, Figure 2) with the direction of the crepe running lengthwise of the pad to aid lengthwise spreading of absorbed fluid in the pad. Alternative absorbent combinations comprise: two cellulose crepe tissue sheets (18, 19) placed either side of the foamed sheet (17, Figure 3) with the directions of crepe of the tissue sheets at right angles to each other, two foamed polyurethane sheets (21, 22 Figure 4) with a cellulose crepe tissue sheet (20) between them the direction of the crepe running lengthwise of the pad; or two sheets of foamed polyurethane (23, 25 Figure 5) and a central sheet of foamed cellulose acetate (24) with sheets of cellulose crepe tissue (26, 27) between the foamed sheets. Alternatively the ends of a facing (29, Figure 6 to 8), which is longer than the absorbent (30) when the latter is dry are folded under the absorbent and secured to it, and the side edges of a backing (31), which is wider than the dry absorbent are wrapped around the sides of the absorbent and secured to the top of the facing.
