Abstract

1395974 Laminated diapers JOHNSON & JOHNSON 6 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 46231/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] The facing layer 16 of a diaper 10, i.e. the layer which contacts the infant, is prepared by forming a web of mixed short (less than “inch), and long (greater than “ inch), fibres and applying a binder to the central portion and a binder differing in concentration or composition to the marginal portions whereby said marginal portions exhibit a lower degree of wettability than does the central portion. Preferably a mixture of 75-98% cotton or wood pulp fibres whose average length is 1/16 to 3/16 inch and 2 to 25% textile length fibres (¢ to 2¢ inchs), most preferably 15% (1À5", 1À5") denier rayon are air laid on to a moving belt. The web is passed under first weir box 58 which applies an ethylacrylate/ acrylomtrile/polycar copolymer emulsion or solution to 1 inch wide longitudinal edge portions. Second weir box 59 applies a mixture of the binder and a sulphonated alkyl ester melting agent to the remainder of the web. (In an alternative embodiment the binder is applied to 1 inch wide edge portions and a 2 inch wide central portion of a double width web, binder plus melting agent is applied to the remainder and the web cut in half longitudinally). The binder applied to the edge portions may contain a small amount of melting agent. Excess binder is removed by suction at 75 and the remainder cured at 310-320‹ F. in oven 76. The binder renders the longitudinal edges 16a hydrophobic (liquid-fibre contact angle 90 degrees or more), but its effect upon the central region is reduced by the presence of the melting agent to give a 30-60 degree contact angle. The diaper comprises a smooth or embossed water impermeable rectangular polyethylene or polyethylene terephthalate sheet 12, a facing layer 16 of equal size and an absorbent layer 14 comprising a smaller rectangle sandwiched between layers 12, 16. Layer 14 is a porous loosely compacted batt formed by air laying short wood pulp or cotton fibres having a moisture content of 5-10%, optionally blended with silk wool, nylon or cellulose acetate fibres and compacting with rolls 46, 47. One surface is then moistened with water and the web calendered at 49 to produce a paper-like compacted surface layer (18, Fig. 2, not shown) of higher wettability and fluid retentivity. An embossed roll may be used to produce densified longitudinal strips or a grid of densified material rather than a continuous layer. The compacted layer (18) contacts the impermeable sheet 12. Sheet 12 is attached to batt 14 through layer 18 and to the edges 16a of the facing layer by adhesive in longitudinal lines 22, spaced dots or a continuous layer or by heat sealing.
