Abstract

1,125,700. Diapers. FARAH MFG. CO. Inc. 14 April, 1967 [14 April, 1966; 11 April, 1967], No. 17293/67. Heading A3V. [Also in Division B5] A diaper comprises an upper layer 10, Fig. 2, of non absorbent fibres containing interstices 12 to allow body fluids to pass, but not return, therethrough to an under layer 13 of at least one sheet of absorbent material secured to the upper layer, which latter has raised portions 16 to contact and maintain the wearer's skin in a dry condition. The diaper is fastened around the wearer by the aid of absorbent or non absorbent margins 19 or tabs 22, Fig. 4, which margins 19 may be continuous with a net, gauze or non absorbent backing sheet 18; alternatively, snaps or clasps are attached to the diaper. The upper layer 10 is woven, tufted or of knitted polypropylene or P.V.C., the interstices 12 preferably being of 5-15 mm diameter. The raised portions 16, which may also have interstices 12, may be in the form of a waffle (16a) or serpentine (16b) pattern (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) and have a height 11 and a crosssection 25 of 1-5 mm and a separating distance 17 of 3-15 mm. The absorbent under-layer 13 may be of cotton, terrycloth, gauze or flannelette. The individual layers of the diaper are sewn together at the edges 21, 23, 24. In an alternative embodiment, a non absorbent knitted or woven layer 34, Fig. 8, is positioned between the non absorbent upper layer 30 and the absorbent under layer 33. The interstices of the intermediate layer 34 are preferably 3-5 mm and are smaller than those 32 of the upper layer 30. The non absorbent layers 30 and 34 may be constructed as a composite.
