Abstract

1403603 Disposable diaper JOHNSON & JOHNSON 6 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 46232/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division B5] Diapers comprises a non-woven fabric facing layer 16, one or two more wettable narrower batts 14 of loosely compacted cellulosic fibres having an integral paper-like densified compacted portion 18 of higher wettability and fluid retentivity than the bulk of the batt, a water impervious sheet 12 at least as extensive as the adjacent batt, and a non-woven fabric outer layer 13 co-terminous with layer 16, the marginal portions of a layer 16 being secured to the marginal portions of sheet 12 or layer 13, layers '13 and 16 being of density less than 0.15 gm/cc and comprising mixed fibres shorter and longer than “ inch, and a second batt 14 if present being larger than the batt adjacent layer 16 (see Fig 4 not shown). Layer 16 may have an inwardly-folded edge portion (Fig 3 not shown) and sheet 12 may be co-terminous with batt 14 (Fig 12 not shown). The layers 13 and 16 may comprises 75-98 wt % wood pulp fibres or cotton linters and 2-25 wt % ¢-2¢ inch rayon fibres and be bonded with a selfcross-linking acrylic emulsion, layer 16 being additionally treated with a wetting agent to render it wettable layer 13 may be thinner and lighter than layer 16 and should be waterrepellant. The batt 14 may be of short wood pulp fibres or cotton linters and the portion 18 may be formed after moistening. The sheet 12 may be polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene terephthalate of thickness 0.00025- 0.003 inch and may be embossed and plasticised: it is preferably bonded to layer 13, batt 14 and the marginal portion of layer 16 by adhesive bead lines, although layer 13 may be heat-sealed thereto along lines or marginal portions. The laminated constructions are folded to form diapers, the folds being secured by adhesive spots. In Fig 8 (not shown) diaper material is manufactured by applying adhesive to both sides of sheet 12 and applying the layers 13, 14, 16 from rolls, the batt material being severed into individual batts at the point of application. The assembly is pressed between rollers and severed to form individual diapers. In Fig 9 (not shown) layers 13 and 16 are split from a sheet which has been formed by plying two fibre webs in which the fibres are laid shinglefashion so that the two fibre directions are at an angle. The splitting of the sheet forms two layers with rough surfaces. Batt material in lengths is fed onto one layer and the sheet 12 is extruded into a roller nip as the fibrous materials pass therethrough.
