Abstract
1402327 Diapers JOHNSON & JOHNSON 6 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 46234/72 Heading A5R A diaper comprises a water wettable bonded facing web 16, a water impervious backing sheet 12 and, between them, a loosely compacted porous batt 14 having a densified paperlike layer 18 integral with the batt on the face of the batt adjacent the backing the densified layer extending continuously over an area of the batt and being of uniform thickness over a major portion of said area and thereby merging with the batt at a planar interface but including minor portions where the plane of the interface is interrupted by parts of the layer projecting across the plane into the region of the batt. Lines 22 of adhesive secure the backing to the batt and overlapping portions of the facing sheet 16. The facing sheet contains at least 75% short filbres (i.e. less than “" long), the remaining fibres being long (i.e. ¢" to 2¢" long) e.g. rayon fibres. The facing sheet is bonded with an acrylic emulsion and treated with a wetting agent and may have a veneer of long fibres on one or both faces. The batt 14 comprises wood pulp or cotton linters and the compacted layer 18 is formed by moisture and pressure, rib-like projecting portions 19 of the densified layer projecting into the batt and being formed by an embossing roller. The backing sheet 12 may be embossed and comprises polyethylene or polyethylene terephthalate. The batt is formed by blowing moist pulpboard ground in a mill (42) Figure 4 (not shown) onto a belt (43) compacting the layer so formed, spraying the layer with water, passing the. layer between calender rolls (49) and embossing rolls (52, 53) to form the projecting portions 19, depositing the layer on a continuous length of backing material (55) and cutting it into individual batts, covering the batts with a continuous length of facing material and subsequently cutting into individual diapers.
