Abstract
1485160 Surgical dressings PALL CORP 31 Dec 1974 [2 Jan 1974] 56224/74 Heading A5R Integral absorbent pad bandages each comprising an absorbent pad portion 15 delimited by compressed, relatively thin portions, are formed by compression in conjunction with either heat, a solvent, adhesive, a bonding agent, or an impregnating agent, of a uniformly thick nonwoven thermoplastic fibrous material. In a first process, Fig. 1, a web 1 of nonwoven material is passed over a heated roll 4 which gives a smooth surface to upper side 7 of the web, embossing rollers 9, 10 then compress the web leaving pad portions 15 upstanding on the upper side of the web. Medicament is applied to the underside of pad portions 15 by rollers 19-21 and are dried in oven 25. Adhesive 25 is applied to the under side of tab portions (8) of the bandages by rollers 26-28. Removable backing papers 30, 31 are applied by rollers 32, 33. The treated web is cut into strips by knives 34, 35 and the strips are then rolled up. Knives 36, 37 may be used to cut short lengths or individual dressings from the web or strips. In a second process Fig. 8 (not shown), generally similar to the first process, an embossing roller is used to produce an absorbent pad which protrudes from the underside of the web. In a further process (not shown), a flat bed platen press embosses the web and adhesive is applied by a flat bed printing press. One embodiment of bandage Fig. 4 (not shown), has tab portions with embossed ribs. Bandages may be made with several pad portions. The web may be made of a variety of hydrophobic thermoplastic fibres.
