Abstract

1,164,491. Laminated disposable diapers. CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO. 17 Aug., 1966 [17 Aug., 1965], No. 36805/66. Heading B5N. [Also in Division A3] A disposable absorbant diaper 11 comprises an elongated pad 15 of loose fibres of cellulosic material formed into a single layer including longitudinally extending adjacent flanking portions 37 of lesser thickness on each side of a longitudinally extending central portion 35 of greater thickness, and an envelope formed of wet strength tissue 13, 19 enclosing the pad, the portions 37 of lesser thickness being folded over upon themselves to form pleats 29. The diaper is formed by laying a continuous layer of cellulosic fibres 35 upon a first web of tissue 13 of approximately three times the width of the pad and folding the tissue 13 around the pad. The enclosed pad is then embossed by rollers 17a, 17b so that longitudinal channels 17 are formed. A further web of tissue 19, carrying spaced reinforcing strips 21, is folded around the assembly which is then passed between rollers 21a, 21b to provide embossed end portions 25 in the region of the strips 21. The rollers 21a, 21b also provide slits 39. The diaper is subsequently folded, spot-embossed at 31 by rollers 31a, 31b, refolded to form the pleats 29, calendered by rolls 32 and cut in the region of the embossings 25 and strips 21 into individual diapers, the slits 39 then providing notches 27 by means of which used diapers may readily be torn longitudinally. The pressure applied by the rollers 27a, 27b and 31a, 31b is sufficient to unite the layers, that applied by the rollers 31a, 31b being sufficient to glassine the cellulosic fibres. The webs 13 and 19 are made of high-wet-strength creped tissue, wet strength being obtained by incorporating therein sufficient melamine resin or other wetstrength agent. In a second embodiment, a sheet of crepe tissue of a width equal to that of the pad and impregnated with micro-crystalline wax is incorporated between the webs 13 and 19.
