Abstract

960,427. Surgical dressings. KIMBERLY CLARK CORPORATION. Aug. 25, 1960 [Sept. 4, 1959], No. 29419/60. Heading A5R. A non-adherent dressing comprises a non- absorbent, non-woven, fluid-permeable web in contact with an absorbent element, the web comprising hydrophobic synthetic fibres united at their intersections by fused binder particles, the average smallest and largest dimensions of which are 10 microns or below and 100 microns or below, respectively, and the fusion temperature of the particles being lower than the melting point of the fibres. A surgical bandage or catamenial napkin comprises an absorbent filler 5 of creped cellulose sheets, short absorbent cellulose fibres ("fluff"), cotton or cellulose sponge. The non-woven wrapper 3 of non-absorbent bonded synthetic fibres covers all but one face of the filler, the thus exposed face of which may be covered with a layer 7 of gauze, scrim or a non- woven fabric of cotton and rayon or thermoplastic fibres. The wrapper consists of fibres derived from polyesters e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides, polyacrylates, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polyacrylonitrile, tetrafluorethylene, or vinylidene chloride. The fibres are bonded by mechanical entanglement with synthetic binder particles which are later fused by heat treatment and which preferably have a similar chemical structure to the fibres used or with natural fibres. The synthetic binder particles consist of polyesters e.g. polyethylene terephthalate and copolymers of ethylene terephthalate and ethylene isophthalate, polyamides e.g. polyhexamethylene adipamides, polyethylene sebacamides and adipamides and their copolymers with caprolactam e.g. copolyamide of polyhexamethylene adipamide and polycaproamide, copolymers of acrylonitrile, polyacrylic and polymethacrylic esters, polyvinylchlorides and copolymers of vinyl chlorides with vinyl esters or vinylidene chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyhydrocarbons, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene, polyvinyl alcohol, partially hydrolized vinyl polyesters, polyurethanes, polyureas, polythiolesters, polysulphonamides, polysulphones, or polyoxymethylene. 100 parts of synthetic fibre may be bonded with from 1 part to 45 parts of binder particles. The web is formed by a paper-making technique. Specification 868,651 is referred to.
