A sanitary napkin 10 comprises an absorbent core in a fluid pervious wrapper 14 and a fluid-permeable web 20 of non-woven polypropylene fibres interposed between one surface of the core and a wrapper. A second web (22), Fig. 3 (not shown) may be provided on the opposite side. The fibres have a denier from 0.5 to 3, and the web has a weight of from 3 to 20 grams/sq. yard. The preferred staple length is from ¢ to 3 inches. The fibres of the web may be heat bonded at minute closely spaced spots, or adhesively bonded at their intersections. The web may be treated with a non-ionic wetting agent such as nonylphenoxypoly (ethyleneoxy) ethanol to increase the rate of fluid transfer. The wrapper may comprise an open non-woven thread structure, such as a web with the threads bonded together at their intersections by a plastisol adhesive and having an applique of cotton fibres attached to the surface by the same adhesive, and may be treated to render it hydrophobic.
