Abstract

1,039,477. Surgical pads. COLGATEPALMOLIVE CO. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 31, 1963], No. 30830/64. Heading A5R. [Also in Division A3] A disposable diaper comprises a core of absorbent material which readily disintegrates when wet and cover members with longitudinal edges overlapping to form an open ended tube which is substantially longer than the core. Suggested materials for the core are sulphite cellulose fluff, multiply crepe wadding, defibred flock of softwood kraft fibres and degreased cotton linters. Suggested materials for the cover members are paper or knitted or other nonwoven fabric, liquid-permeable but of high wet strength and impregnated with a bacteriostat. A core of tissue paper comprises overlapping layers 12, 13, Fig. 2 (not shown), and cover members 10 and 16 are spot glued at 15 and 17 respectively to the core, Fig. 4, but not to each other to facilitate disposal of the diaper. Embossing may be used instead of glue. A self-supporting diaper has a band 18 secured to each end for tying about the baby's body, Fig. 8 (not shown). In an alternative embodiment the edges of the layer 16 extend to the underside of the diaper and in a further embodiment one of the regions of overlap is located on the underside of the diaper. Alternative arrangements of core sections are described.
