Abstract
1445951 Spot bonded fabrics JOHNSON & JOHNSON 15 Jan 1975 [16 Jan 1974] 1715/75 Heading D1R A bonded non-woven fabric comprises a fibrous layer of: 0 to 75% by weight of "textile length" fibres and 100 to 75% by weight of "short" fibres the fibre layer being bonded by primary, intermittently spaced binder sites 16 extending through the fabric and by secondary intermittently spaced binder sites 18 positioned on the surface of the fabric between (and, optionally also on) the primary binder sites. The "textile length" fibres have a length of ¢ to 3 inches, and may be cotton, rayon, nylon 6, nylon 66, polyester, polyolefin polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic, modacrylic or a cellulose derivative. The "short" fibres are 1/64 inch to less than ¢ inch long and may be wood pulp or cotton linters. The web may be air laid, wet laid or carded. The primary and secondary binders are the same or different and may be an aqueous dispersion of polymers or copolymers of polyvinyl ethers, plasticised and unplasticised polyvinyl acetate or polyvinyl chloride, polyethylacrylate, polybutyl acrylate, polymethacrylic resin, ethylene-vinyl acetate, ethylene-vinyl chloride copolymer or styrene-butadiene copolymer, polyamide or an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol. The primary binder add-on is 1 to 30% by weight of the bonded fabric and the surface coverage is 5 to 50%. The secondary binder add-on is 0.2 to 10% for each side and the coverage 40 to 90% and renders the fabric resistant to abrasion. Several patterns are specified. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 web w is formed at 10, its moisture content increased or decreased at 12, the primary binder B applied from a print roll at 14 and the secondary binder B applied to one surface at 20 in a pattern which includes the through bonded areas 16. The web is dried in an oven 22 and the other surface printed with secondary binder at 28. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, not shown, print stations 14. 20 are replaced by a combined print station which both applies the primary binder and secondary binder of the toD surface, the secondary binder being confined to the areas that are not free-bonded, the combined print station having a roller with deep grooves for through bonding and shallow grooves for surface bonding. The other surface is bonded as in Fig. 1.
