Abstract

1452325 Non-woven fabrics BONDED FIBRE FABRIC Ltd 21 Aug 1974 [10 Sept 1973] 42433/73 Heading D1R A heat sealable flushatole non-woven fabric used as the wrapper of a disposable napkin is obtained by impregnating a fibrous web with a camposdtion comprising a mixture of a watersoluble metallic salt of an acrylic polymer or copolymer and up to 50% by weight of the composition of a water insoluble polyacrylate or acrylic copolymer or a water-soluble ammonium salt of a polyacrylate or acrylic copolymer and heating to dry the fabric and convert the ammonium salt, if any, to an insoluble polymer. The exemplified water soluble metallic salt is the sodium salt of an acrylic copolymer. Preferably the fibres are cotton, rayon or a mixture thereof optionally with a minor proportion of synthetic plastics fibres and have a length of ¢ to 2 inches. They are corded into a web of weight 10-18 g/m<SP>2</SP>. The web is prebonded with 0.2 to 12% by weight of a watersoluble binder, e.g. sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol or a water soluble salt of an acrylic copolymer. The web is printed with a discontinuous pattern of the heat sealable, waiter dispersable binder so that 15 to 50% of the surface is covered by binder, e.g. in 1 mm wide strips separated by 3 mms. The heat sealable binder comprises 10 to 35% by weight of the dry fabric. The fabric is wrapped around a core of wood fluff, cotton batting or tissue paper and heat sealed.
