Abstract

1379660 Seaming JOHNSON & JOHNSON 18 May 1973 [23 May 1972] 24134/72 Heading B5K [Also in Divisions D1-2 and B2] A heat-sealable water-disintegratable non- woven fabric comprises a web of fibres bonded with a binder comprising up to 100% by weight of the fibres of a water-soluble binding agent and from 0 to less than 100% by weight of the fibres of a water-insoluble binding agent, said fabric having on at least part of at least one surface thereof spaced areas of a heat-sealable thermoplastic material, the separation being such that adjacent areas are not linked by fibres. Thus on a corded web of 38 mm. fibres the areas comprise 45 mm. squares separated by 40 mm. in the longitudinal direction and 20 mm. in the transverse direction. It may be heat-sealed to itself when forming the cover of a sanitary napkin. Preferably the fibres are viscose rayon, optionally mixed with cotton and/or thermoplastic fibres, of length 2 to 5 cm. and denier 1À5 to 3. They may be corded, air laid or wet laid and the web is preferably rearranged or "bundled" by the action of fluid streams. Suitable water-soluble binders are sodium acrylate polymer and an alkyl cellulose. Water insoluble binders are polyacrylic acid ester, polyvinylidene dichloride, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate and polystyrene-butadiene. Where a water insoluble binder is used it is dispensed in the solution of the water soluble binder. The binder liquor may be applied by a rotogravure roller to give four wavy or sawtooth lines per inch. The heat-sealable thermoplastic material may be polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or polyethylene-vinyl acetate. It is preferably plasticized with a phthalate and applied by printing to give a deposition of 5 to 15 g./m.<SP>2</SP> in each printed area. Within each area the thermoplastic material may be continuous or discontinuous, e.g. a series of lines 1 mm. apart. The fabric may be heated to up to 135‹ C. to sinter the thermoplastic material.
