Abstract

1451619 Laminates MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 6 Dec 1973 56546/73 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions A5 and D1-D2] Sanitary products of laminated construction include a ply which is readily dispersible in an aqueous medium containing an enzyme, said ply consisting of a non-woven web of fibres bonded together by a water-insoluble, enzymedisintegratable, solid binder which consists of a polymer of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer covalently bonded with a naturally occurring, enzyme-degradable, water soluble polymeric material, the binder being present in an amount from 0À3-100% by wt. of the fibres, sufficient to provide the fabric with a wet strength of at least 0À5 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> in an aqueous medium in the absence of an enzyme, and to increase the resistance of the fabric to dispersion in plain water whilst enabling dispersion of the fabric in a period of 5-30 minutes in an aqueous medium containing an enzyme capable of disintegrating the binder. The fibres may be rayon, cotton, wool, silk, linen, hemp, wood, nylon, or polyester fibres. The sanitary products may be made by assembling and pressing together appropriate laminµ with or without the use of adhesive. A typical multi-ply product suitable for use as a diaper or absorbent pad consists of three plies, (1) a body-contacting ply of cellulosic fibres bonded together by an appropriate enzyme-degradable binder, (2) an intermediate ply of creped tissue paper or batt of cellulosic fibres, and (3) an outer ply similar to the bodycontacting ply excepting that it has a waxy coating on one of its surfaces. The assembly of plies is preferably pressed together at the edges to adhere sufficiently to withstand normal handling.
