Abstract

1476444 Non-woven polyolefin sheets E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 21 Oct 1974 [24 Oct 1973] 45478/74 Heading B2E [Also in Division D1] A non woven sheet suitable for use in making disposable garments, bags, dust cloths, tablecloths, drop cloths and draperies comprises film fibrils of a linear polyolefine, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene or a copolymer of 97% ethylene and 3% octene-1 and one side of this sheet comprises a water-repellent continuous layer of fused film fibrils coated with a continuous layer of a hydrophobic polymer, e.g. styrene/butadiene copolymer or plasticised polyvinyl, chloride, while the other side of the sheet has areas of non fused film-fibril elements to which a wetting agent is adsorbed. Suitable wetting agents include alkyl aryl polyether alcohols, the diethylcyclohexylamine salt of lauryl sulphate monoester and quaternised alkylolamine esters. The styrene butadiene polymer may be carboxylated. Such a sheet may be prepared from a cold consolidated fibrous non woven sheet of film fibril elements by subjecting it to heat and pressure during passage between two rollers, preferably providing an embossed pattern on the surface. Usually one roller is heated and the other has a resilient surface and is not heated. This produces a sheet one side of which has film fibril elements fused together to form a continuous layer. The porous side of the sheet may be passed between embossing rollers under less severe conditions. The polymer coating is applied to the sheet, e.g. as an aqueous latex, the coating is dried and then the wetting agent is applied.
