1318079 Coated sheet material KURARAY CO Ltd 14 Aug 1970 [19 Aug 1969 22 Dec 1969 27 Dec 1969 13 Feb 1970 23 June 1970] 39382/70 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A composite sheet material having a good leather-like grain break, surface scuffing resistance and abrasion resistance and dyeability comprises a substrate layer of flexible material, e.g. paper, or woven, non-woven or knitted fabrics, covered on one side with a layer of porous polymeric material having a non porous polymeric coating of thickness 1-100 microns the surface of the porous polymeric layer in contact with the non-porous coating having a finely napped texture with naps 0.03-0.5 mm in length. The finely napped porous polymeric layer may be produced by abrading or tearing a porous polymeric layer formed by coagulation of a polymeric solution layer or foaming of a polymeric layer or solution layer or by bonding polymeric particles having a porous structure to each other, and may be bonded to the substrate. after it is formed or formed directly on the substrate. The porous polymeric layer may be produced from polyethylene terephthalate, nylon-6 or -6, 6, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl acetate, alcohol or chloride, polypropylene, polyethylene, vinyl acetate-acrylonitrile copolymer, polymethacrylic or acrylic acid esters, polyurethane, polyisoprene, acrylonitrile - butadiene copolymer or styrene-butadiene copolymer. The non porous polymeric coating may be of polyurethane which may contain a dyestuff, pigment, stabilizer or antistatic agent, and may be applied as a plurality of coatings by spraying, brushing, knife coating, extrusion coating, flat roll, gravure roll or dipping and the napped, porous, polymeric layer may be subjected to heat and pressure preferably after impregnation with a swelling agent or polymer and before application of the non-porous polymeric coating. The non porous polymeric coating may be applied to a support which may be a sheet, plate or roll of metal, polyethylene, polyvinyl alcohol, polypropylene, polyamide, polyester, polytetrafluoroethylene, polytrifluoroethylene, silicone rubber or release paper covered with synthetic resin, and transferred to the napped surface under heating or with the use of an adhesive. The vapour permeability of the upper layer may be improved by perforating it by needle punching, by electric discharge or by the addition and elimination of granules, e.g. metal granules, and may be given a patterned surface 'by means of press plates or rolls. In the Examples the substrate layer is a non- woven fibrous mat of nylon and rayon fibres impregnated with a polyurethane, a nonwoven fibrous mat of mixed spun fibres containing 50% of nylon 6 and 50% of polystyrene, impregnated with polyurethane and treated to remove the polystyrene from the fibres, or a non-woven fibrous mat of crimped mixed spun fibres containing 50% of nylon-6 and 50% of polypropylene treated to remove the nylon-6 from the fibres.
