Abstract

1464223 Polyurethane-coated leather-like material KURARAY CO Ltd 19 May 1975 [25 May 1974] 21252/75 Heading B2E A leather-like sheet material for making shoes comprises a substrate of polyurethaneimpregnated fibrous mat, a first coating layer of porous structure composed of a polyestertype polyurethane elastomer, and a second (or finish) coating layer formed by coating with a solution composed mainly of a polyestertype polyurethane elastomer obtained by reacting an organic diisocyanate, a linear or branched aliphatic or an alicyclic polyether glycol of molecular weight 500-4000 and derived from a C 4-14 glycol, and a lowmolecular weight compound having two active hydrogen atoms as a chain extender (particularly an aliphatic or aromatic glycol or diamine) so that the content of nitrogen atoms derived from the isocyanate groups is 3.7- 8.0% by weight, the finish-coating layer having a dry solid thickness of 3-30 microns. The substrate may be a non-woven, woven or knitted fabric of nylon-6, polyester, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl alcohol, regenerated cellulose, cotton, wool, polystyrene/nylon-6 or polyethylene/polyethylene terephthalate fibres. The fibres may also be "oriented multi-hole fibres" (i.e. fibres having a cross-section in which a number of holes appear) or "fine-denierbundle fibres" (i.e. fibres composed of a bundle of c.300 fibres of 0.01-0.0001 denier, the bundle being less than 0.5 denier thick). The first coating may be applied to the impregnated (and possibly coagulated) fabric as a solution followed either by immersion of the coated fabric in a non-solvent such as water to coagulate the coating or by evaporation of the solvent. The porosity of the first coating may be controlled by means of a coagulation-regulating agent (a number of which are specified) and the coating may be 0.1-0.5 mm thick. It may be embossed or coloured prior to application of the finish coating. The latter may particularly comprise a polyurethane derived from polytetramethylene ether glycol, p, p'-diphenyl-methane diisocyanate and 1, 4-butane diol or ethylene glycol but a number of other polyether glycols, diisocyanates and chain extenders are also specified. The finish coating, which may be non-porous, is applied by knife, roller or spray coating, gravure printing or by transfer coating using a release support such as a glass sheet, metal plate or a polyester or polyethylene film. A colouring agent may be incorporated in the finish coating or coloured and non-coloured layers may be applied alternately. The product may be further coated or may be embossed with a pattern.
