Abstract

734,725. Paper, or agglutinated fibres &c. containing cellulose derivatives. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. June 5, 1953 [June 6, 1952], No. 15644/53. Classes 96 and 140. Paper, tissue, filter paper, or paper-board, &c. is sized as by adding to the pulp at the beater, or by applying to the paper surface, or fibres of cotton, silk, linen, ramie, jute, asbestos, or polyacrylonitrile, polyamide, or vinyl polymer filaments, or glass wool are bonded with 0.1 to 8.0 per cent of free acid cellulose glycolic or hydroxypropionic acid ether, or its ammonium salt, having a degree of polymerization corresponding to a viscosity of at least 5.7 secs. (modified Ostwald-Fenske) and a degree of neutralization not greater than 50 per cent, and having been heated, after its addition to the fibrous material, to above 175‹ F. to render the ether insoluble. Heating may be by hot air, infra-red ovens, induction, steam, or hot plates or irons, and may liberate the ammonia. An example (7) mentions steeping the sized paper in ethyl alcohol and hydrochloric acid prior to the heat treatment, at 300‹ F.
