Abstract

518,917. Treating textiles with liquids. DUNBAR, C., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 10, 1938, No. 17344. [Class 15 (ii)] Woven or knitted textile materials made from animal or vegetable fibres or from artificial fibres are treated so as to obtain a full handle and soft feel by impregnating them with an aqueous dispersion of a polythene, a halogenated polythene, or an ethylene interpolymer, with which there has been incorporated if desired one or more plasticizers or fillers. The materials are subjected to wringing or hydroextracting or squeezing and drying once or more than once so that there is deposited on the so treated materials between .5 and 50 per cent. of their weight of the polymer. The dried materials are heated at a temperature higher than the softening point of the polymer with or without the application of mechanical pressure. Triethanolamine may be used as dispersing agent and dibutyl phthalate or tricresyl phosphate may be used as plasticizer. Fillers or watersoluble cellulose derivatives, starch, gelatine or glue may be incorporated in the treating solution. In examples, wool serge, cotton limbrick, fabric made of viscose staple fibre, linen dress material, and knitted viscose rayon material are treated. Aqueous dispersions of an interpolymer of ethylene and methyl methacrylate, an interpolymer of ethylene and diethyl ester of itaconic acid, and a chlorinated polythene, are used.
