Abstract

Paper, fabric, wood, glass, metal, and like materials are coated or impregnated with a solid polymer of ethylene by treatment with a solution or suspension of the polymer, by application of a melt of the polymer or by application of a pre-formed film of the polymer (with the aid of heat with or without pressure). Laminated materials may be prepared from the coated materials alone, coated materials and uncoated materials, or uncoated materials and interlayers of sheets of the polymer. The polymers may be prepared according to Specification 471,590, it being preferred to use polymers of molecular weight not less than 4,000. Suitable solvents for the polymer include xylene, benzene, toluene, tetrahydronaphthalene, decahydronaphthalene, chlorobenzene, amyl acetate or trichlorethylene. Suitable materials for coating, impregnating or laminating include wood-pulp paper, pulp board, rag paper, vegetable parchment, translucent paper, absorbent papers, filter paper, blotting paper, sheets of regenerated cellulose, cellulose esters, cellulose ethers, or synthetic resins, fabrics of cotton, jute, linen, wool, silk, rayon, synthetic resins or rubber, wood, glass, metal or metal gauze. In examples: (1) thin wood-pulp paper, (2) wood-pulp paper, (3) rag paper, (4) a transparent paper, (6) cotton fabric, (7) porous paper, (9) paper for milk containers, and (12) regenerated cellulose sheet, are impregnated with a hot xylene solution of the polymer; (10) a fabric or screen of iron wires is coated with a hot toluene solution of the polymer, or a pre-formed sheet of the polymer is applied by heat and pressure; (5) a film of the polymer is placed between two impregnated sheets prepared according to example 4 and hot-pressed; (8) porous paper is coated with powdered polymer or molten polymer and the coated paper heated; (11) a film of the polymer is hot-pressed onto vegetable-parchment paper.
