Compound sheet materials.-Imitation linen, towels, handkerchiefs, serviettes, table cloths, sheets, swaddling clothes, &c. are made by pressing superposed layers consisting wholly or mainly of cellulose wadding of which some layers are sized or impregnated more strongly than others and some may be free from size or impregnation. Normally goffering is effected simultaneously with or subsequent to the pressing, but sized &c. layers which have previously been goffered may be used, the material preferably being sized in a hollander before formation of the lavers. The cellulose wadding may be replaced wholly or in part by Yoshino or Japanese paper &c. In practice, cellulose is ground in a hollander until it becomes slimy or smeary and is then formed into wadding. A number of superposed layers of wadding, with or without layers of paper or strengthening layers of cotton wool, pass close to a device where the impregnating agent is sprayed upon them in a fine mist by nozzles such as are used in Duco-lacquering. Alternatively the impregnation may be effected by coating, dipping or pressing. A pair of goffered or plain rollers then press the layers together and when the pressing and goffering are complete, the material is dried on one or more cloth covered drying cylinders. To keep the layers better together, the edges of one layer may be folded over one or more adjacent layers. Suitable impregnating agents are nitro-cellulose, acetyl-cellulose, gelatine, glue, &c., or paraffin oil or wax if a waxlike surface is desired. Alternatively, a mixture of water, starch, borax, Japan wax, casein, blanc fixe, gelatine, glue, resin glue and casein with or without hardening or softening agents may be used. For increasing the strength of any layer, colloidal solutions of rubber &c. may be used. Specifications 252,719 and 252,720 are referred to.
