Abstract

813,548. Paper containing synthetic resins; proofing paper against water, grease, etc.; laminates. ROHM & HAAS CO. July 26, 1956 [Aug. 12, 1955], No. 23114/56. Classes 96 and 140. Paper, e.g. thin porous tissue, made from sulphite or kraft pulp, α-cellulose fibres or rags, &c., e.g. including potentially adhesive fibres such as vinyl or acrylic polymers or cellulosic fibres coated with melamine- or urea-formaldehyde, or regenerated cellulose &c. and which may be given high wet strength by incorporating 1 to 3 per cent of malamine- or urea-formaldehyde condensates or polymers of ureidoethyl vinyl ethers, is impregnated as by immersion in an aqueous dispersion of a synthetic resinous addition polymer having a transition temperature of at least 45‹ C. so that the resinous polymer is deposited as particles in and on the paper which is then dried at a temperature which is too low for such particles to coalesce. The paper may then be subjected to heat and pressure so that it becomes partially transparent and may be protective against oil, grease, oxygen or water. It may be applied over plies of other materials, e.g. paper or paperboard, wood, unglazed ceramics, hemi-cellulose gypsum boards, felt, or leather, labels, or photographs, so that on heating and pressing, a decorative or transparent coating is formed. Alternatively, plies of wood or cardboard may be hot-pressed with an interposed ply of the paper, and are thus adhered together. The resin particle size rnay be 1 micron, and the weight of resin may equal 60 to 180 per cent of that of the fibres. The resin may be formed from methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-, amyl-, hexyl-, octyl- or decyl-, acrylate, &c., or from amyl-, hexyloetyi-, decyl-, or butoxyethyl methacrylate or other alkoxyethyl methacrylate or acrylate. Preferably the alkyl acrylates have 6 to 18 carbon atoms in the alkyl group or acrylates of primary or secondary alcohols of 1 to 5 carbon atoms may be used.
