Abstract

1308831 Paper of man-made fibre MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 25 Feb 1970 [25 Feb 1969 (2) 7923/70 Heading D2B Paper is made from an aqueous dispersion that contains fibres of at least two different kinds and also contains carboxymethylcellulose. Fbres of the first kind are of polyester or polyolefine, particularly polypropylene; those of the second kind are soluble in hot water at 30 to 100‹C, particularly of polyvinyl alcohol, and the CMC is present in an amount of 0.003 to 0.1% by weight based on the dispersion. There may also be present fibres of a third kind which have a melting point lower than those of the first kind, or fibres of a fourth, inert kind. The third fibres may be staple fibres of polyethylene, or composite staple fibres of polyethylene and polypropylene, when the first fibres are of polypropylene, but fibrous materials made by fibrillating slit films of polyethylene or synthetic polymer foam, and fibres of chlorinated polyethylene, chlorinated polypropylene, chlorosulphonated polyethylene and ethylene/vinylacetate copolymer are also referred to. Polyethylene oxide or polyphosphate or a non-ionic surface-active agent may be used in conjunction with the C.M.C. The fourth fibres, if present may be of wood pulp or may be synthetic. When the third fibre is present, the sheet is subjected to heat treatment at a temperature above the melting point of the third fibre but below the shrinking temperature of the first. Paper with or without the third fibre may be printed with a non-thermoplastic paste in a suitable pattern, and then heattreated at a temperature above the shrinking temperature of the first fibre but below its melting point, to obtain a patterned, bulked sheet.
