Abstract

1491937 Polyolefin fibrils MONTEDISON SpH 24 March 1975 [25 March 1974] 12124/75 Heading C3P [Also in Division D2] A process for making a sheet, film, or other article of an olefin polymer comprises forming a component comprising at least 70% by wt. of fibrils of an olefin polymer having a M.W. of from 30,000 to 300,000 and a melt index of from 1À5 to 30, and sintering the fibrils by heating them at or above the softening temperature of the polymer until the superficial fibrous layers melt. In the examples a n-hexane solution of polyethylene was ejected through a nozzle to collide with a jet of dry saturated steam at an input speed of 470 m./sec. to produce fibrils having a mean length of 3À8 mm. and an average diameter of 36 Á. The olefin polymer may be a high or low density polyethylene, polypropylene predominantly consisting of isotactic macromolecules, poly α- butene, poly-4-methyl-1-pentene, an ethylene/ propylene copolymer of the block or random type, or a mixture thereof. The fibrils may be used alone or together with cellulosic fibres, other synthetic polymer fibres, or an inert filler or pigment.
