Abstract
1386982 Polyolefine films CROWN ZELLERBACH CORP 3 March 1972 [3 March 1971] 10185/72 Heading B5B [Also in Division D2] Films and sheets containing polyolefins are made by heating at least a part of a web containing at least 10% by wt. of fibrous polyolefinic material to a temperature sufficient to cause the polyolefin fibres to coalesce at points of contact and then cooling it. The polyolefin is linear and has an average molecular weight of at least 200,000, measured from the viscosity, and a melt index of substantially zero. The fibres have a surface area of at least 1À0 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. The resulting sheet may be pressed during or after the heating step and may be oriented biaxially. Depending upon the degree of fusion and the content of polyolefin fibre in the web, the porosity and transparency may vary within wide limits. In the products the fibres may retain some of their identity even in the fused portions, although complete fusion to a film is contemplated. Examples illustrate the preparation of sheets from polyethylene, polypropylene and ethylene/ vinyl acetate copolymer.
