Abstract
1,264,624. Fibrillated filaments. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 23 Dec., 1968 [26 Dec., 1967], No. 61099/68. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D2] Fibres used for pulp or paper manufacture are prepared by fibrillating filaments of thermoplastics materials, each of which filaments contain at least three melt-extrudable polymers that are immiscible with one another in the molten state. One of the polymers is a polyvinyl ester hydrolysed to the extent of 30 to 60% by weight, and at least two others have overlapping orientation-temperature ranges. Preferably these two are polyethylene and polystyrene, but reference is also made to polyolefines generally, polyamides, polyesters, polyethers, polyurethanes, polycarbonates, polysulphones, polymers of methacrylic esters, and polymers and copolymers of vinyl esters. The polyvinyl ester for hydrolysis may be made by polymerization in the presence of a polymeric interfacial agent, e.g. a copolymer or graft polymer of an alpha-olefine with a vinyl ester, a polyvinyl alkyl ether, a propylene oxide rubber or a butadiene-styrene rubber, and may be hydrolysed in the presence of basic or acidic catalysts. The three polymers may be fluxed together at elevated temperature, melt extruded into filaments, oriented by cold drawing and fibrillated by chopping and beating in water. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 836,328.
