Abstract
1,165,312. Helically crimpable composite staple fibres. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 24 Jan., 1968 [24 Jan., 1967], No. 3693/68. Addition to 1,075,689. Heading B5B. A helically crimpable composite staple fibre comprises a laterally eccentric assembly of at least two synthetic polymeric components at least one of which is a polyester partly crystalline in stable conformation that does not exceed 90% of the length of the fully extended molecular conformation of the polyester, the polyester generally assuming a position on the inside of crimp helices formed when the assembly crimps, the staple fibre having a crimp index less than 8%, a crimp development of from 5 to 15% and a crimp frequency of from 9 to 15 crimps per extended inch. A second component of the assembly may have a crystalline conformation more closely approaching its fully extended molecular conformation than the first component. The assembly may contain as a second component polyethylene terephthalate. The polyester referred to may be polytrimethylene terephthalate, polytrimethylene dinaphthalate, or polytrimethylene bibenzoate. In example, a 98/2 mol-ratio copolymer of trimethylene terephthalate and ethylene sodium sulpho-isophthalate of 0À63 intrinsic viscosity and a 98/2 mol-ratio copolymer of ethylene terephthalate and ethylene sodium sulpho-isophthalate of 15À0 relative viscosity are spun in a 35/65 ratio to form side-by-side bicomponent composite fibres as in Example V of the parent Specification, except that the extrusion temperature is 290-295‹ C. and the windup speed 485 metres/min. The filaments are drawn to 316% of their spun length in a bath of water at 83‹ C. and annealed at constant length at 180‹ C. for 30 seconds. The crimp index, crimp development and crimp frequency of 3-inch staple fibres cut from the filaments are 3À6%, 13À5% and 9À6% respectively.
