Abstract

1,075,689. Crimpable composite filaments. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. July 21, 1965 [July 24, 1964], No. 31018/65. Heading B5B. A helically crimpable composite filament comprises a laterally eccentric assembly (sideby-side or eccentric sheath core) of two synthetic polymeric components one of which is a polyester partly crystalline in stable conformation that does not exceed 90% of the length of the fully extended molecular conformation of the polyester, the said polyester having a higher shrinkability at moderately elevated temperature than the other component whereby it is adapted to assume generally a position on the inside of crimp helices formed when the assembly crimps. The said polyester may be poly- (trimethylene terephthalate, poly(trimethylene dinaphthalate) or poly(trimethylene bibenzoate). The second component of the filament may have a crystalline conformation more closely approaching its fully extended molecular conformation than the first component, e.g. 95% of the length of the fully extended molecular conformation. The Specification does not contain any process claims. In an example of a preferred process for making the fibres, a poly(trimethylene terephthalate) having an intrinsic viscosity of 1À3 and a polyethylene terephthalate having a relative viscosity of 18 are cospun at 280‹ C. from a spinneret in which two melts of the polymers are brought together just behind each extrusion capillary. The resulting composite filaments are drawn to 470% of their original length at 93‹ C. and annealed at 170‹ C. for about 0À1 second or longer while held at constant length. The polyester of higher shrinkability must be non- extended to the extent that the crystalline repeat-distance is 90% or less of the fully extended chemical repeat distance. An X-ray technique is described for measuring the crystalline repeat-distance of the filament components, and a molecular model technique is described for measuring their chemical repeat distance: Both measurements are recorded in Angstrom units and the ratio A/B x 100 is described as the per cent extended.
