Abstract
1332611 Polybutene fibres MOBIL OIL CORP 27 Jan 1972 [5 Feb 1971] 3870/72 Heading B5B Fibres are formed by melt drawing a butene based polymer from a die at a melt temperature of from 120 to 270C. and with a draw down ratio of from 10 to 300, the butene based polymer having a melt index of from 0À4 to 20 and a crystallinity of from 30 to 65, the fibres being converted from Form II to Form I. Preferably the butene based polymer is polybutene-1-homopolymer, or a copolymer of 92 mol per cent butene-1 and 8 mol per cent ethylene, but in general the term butene based polymer may include tactic polybutene-1, tactic random copolymers of butene-1 and up to 20 mol per cent ethylene, and tactic random copolymer of butene-1 and up to 20 mol per cent propylene. The draw down ratio is desirably from 10 to 50 and the fibres may be converted from Form II to Form I at ambient temperatures, especially 25-30C to form elastic fibres. Where a draw down ratio of at least 14 is used, the fibres may be spun to form high-tenacity fibres having a tenacity of at least 4 gpd, especially 4 to 15 gpd.
