Abstract

Hollow filaments of synthetic organic thermoplastic polymeric material are produced by melt spinning the material through a spinneret under such conditions that the " die swell factor " of the material is between 2À5 and 10, the spinneret being provided with at least one unobstructed extrusion orifice which defines, without completely surrounding, an area of the spinneret face devoid of orifices, or being provided with two or more unobstructed extrusion orifices which define, without completely surrounding, an area of the spinneret face devoid of orifices. The minimum distance between the adjacent ends or terminal portions of the circumscribing orifice or orifices is between 3 and 15 mils. (0À076 and 0À38 mm.). The molten polymeric material may be extruded through the spinneret under such conditions that the " die swell factor " of the material is between 2À5 and 10, and the average diameter, D 2 of the imperforate area of the spinneret being greater than AD 1 , wherein A is the die swell factor of the polymeric material and D 1 is the maximum orifice width in a direction radial to the centre of the imperforate area. The imperforate area may be defined by at least two separate and distinct orifices having " shape factors " greater than 1À4. D 2 may be greater then 2 AD 1 . The expression " die swell factor " is defined as the ratio of the maximum diameter of the stream of extruded polymer melt to the diameter of the orifice opening when employing a spinneret having a circular orifice sufficiently remote from any other orifices of the spinneret that the stream does not coalesce with the stream or streams extruded from any other orifice or orifices which may be present in the spinneret. The expression " shape factor " is defined as the ratio of the longest straight line which can be drawn within a cross-section of the orifice to D 1 . The molten polymeric material used may comprise a dispersion of a first polymer as a distinct discontinuous phase within a continuous phase of a second polymer. The first polymer may be a polyester such as a polyethylene terephthalate and the second polymer may be a fibre-forming polyamide such as a polycaproamide. Filaments made using these polymer dispersions may consist of a sheath containing an internal longitudinally extending cavity, the sheath comprising a continuous phase polymer containing dispersed therein a second polymer phase in the form of microfibres lying predominantly parallel with the axis of the filament. The microfibres may have a length-to-diameter ratio greater than 5. The portion of the spinneret face comprising an area devoid of orifices and defined by a single circumscribing orifice may be as shown in Fig. 9 and examples of portions of spinneret faces comprising an area devoid of orifices and defined by an arrangement of two or more orifices are shown in Figs. 2 to 8 and 13.
