Abstract
1,063,286. Composite filaments. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. July 15, 1964 [July 15, 1963], No. 29161/64. Heading B5B. A splittable composite filament is made by (1) extruding at least one polyamide component, having a relative viscosity (RV) measured after extrusion, of 30-60, and at least one polyester component having RV, after extrusion, of 15- 24, from a spinneret orifice in side-by-side relationship to form a composite filament, the ratio of the polyamide RV to the polyester RV being 1À5/1 to 2À5/1; (2) attenuating the composite filament by pulling it away from the orifice at a speed at least 40 times the extrusion speed; (3) quenching the filament; (4) drawing the filament 2-8 times its original length. A polymeric antistatic agent e.g. a polyalkylene ether, may be dispersed as a separate phase in at least one of the components, in which case, the RV of the polyester component is 22-30. The composite filament may be drawn at a temperature above 100‹ C. and then heated in relaxed state at 80‹ C. or above for a time sufficient to produce a retraction of 6-11%. The filament may also be heated before drawing to a temperature of at least 80‹ C. The filament is substantially crimp-free, and its components adhere together until woven into a fabric but readily separate during fabric finishing operations. RV of the components after extrusion are determined by isolating the components from a spun yarn and measuring the viscosities of solutions thereof under specified conditions. In an example, melts of polyethylene terephthalate and polyhexamethylene adipamide are extruded simultaneously through Y-shaped orifices in the spinning head disclosed in Specification 1,016,861. The resulting trilobal filaments are air-quenched, wound at 125 times the extrusion speed, and drawn using a draw pin at 100‹ C.
