Abstract
1,120,241. Sheath-core composite filaments. KANEGAFUCHI BOSEKI K.K. 27 July, 1965, No. 32014/65. Heading B5B. A composite filament of the sheath-core type comprises a sheath of organic polymeric fibreforming material and a core of organic polymeric fibre-forming material having a modulus of elasticity greater than that of the sheath. The core has a unitary non-circular cross-sectional shape, the ratio of the second moment of a cross-section of the core referred to either of two directions intersecting at right angles to each other or any of three directions intersecting at 120 degrees to each other and passing through the centre of gravity of the cross-section of the core to the second moment of a circle having an area equal to that of the cross-section of the core being at least 0.8 and the mean of the ratios of the second moments of the core referred to the specific directions to the second moment of said circle exceeding 1.2. The shape of the cross-section of the core may be an equilateral triangle or a Y, while the cross-section of the whole filament may be circular in shape. The polymeric material constituting the sheath may be receptive to dyes. The composite filament is formed by melt extrusion. As shown in Fig. 16, the spinneret used may comprise an inner jet or nozzle 3 and an outer nozzle or extrusion orifice 4 spaced downstream from the outlet of the nozzle 3 through which is extruded the core polymer 1. Simultaneously the sheath polymer is extruded through the nozzle 4 forming the composite filament 5. Figs. 17 to 19 are examples of a plan view of the cross-section of the nozzle 3 superimposed on that of the nozzle 4. The cross-sectional shapes of the nozzles 3 and 4 and the ratio of the areas of these crosssections to one another are selected to be such as to produce composite filaments in which the relationships of the cross-sections of the sheath and core are as specified in claim 1.
