A spinneret for spinning conjugate filaments comprises a spinneret plate 1 in Fig. 1 having at least one conduit 2 and one orifice 3 connected to each conduit, a distributing block 4 superposed upstream of the spinneret plate and provided with two side reservoirs 5, 6 on either side of a central reservoir 7. Ducts 8, 9 lying along the adjoining surfaces of the spinneret plate and distribution block connect the two side reservoirs to an inlet to the conduit 2. A feed nozzle 10 connects the central reservoir 7 to the upper portion of the duct opposite the conduit 2 through aperture 11, the longer axis of which lies at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the duct 8, 9. The long axis of the aperture is shorter than the width of the duct measured at the level at which the spinneret plate 1 and the block 4 join, where the duct should attain its maximum width. One end of the aperture 11 is in line with the side of the duct 8, 9. In a modified form, illustrated in Figs. 19 and 20, the side reservoir 5 is in the form of an annulus and the other 6 is located in the centre of the block. The central reservoir 7 is also in the form of an annulus. The orifices 3 are arranged around the circumference of a circle. In use, the reservoirs 5, 6 of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 are charged with a melt of. material A and reservoir 7 with a different material B. A passes from 5 and 6 into ducts 8 and 9 respectively. Material B passes through nozzle 10 to aperture 11 and thence into material A. The combined stream passes down conduit 2 and is extruded as a conjugate filament through orifice 3. The aperture 11 governs the shape of component B in the spun filament and is chosen accordingly from among the many shapes disclosed. If desired, a three-component filament may be spun using this apparatus. In this case reservoirs 5 and 6 are filled with different materials.
