Abstract

1,137,027. Crimped polypropylene fibres. TOYO BOSEKI K.K. 6 April, 1967 [6 April, 1966], No. 15952/67. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] A hollow three-dimensionally crimped filament or fibre consisting of polypropylene or of polypropylene containing not more than 20% by weight of another homopolymer or copolymer, said crimped filament having a difference in the indices of mean birefringence across the cross-section of the filament, said difference measured between two diametrically opposed points being not less than 5%, and said filament having 6 or more three-dimensional crimps per 25 mm. of its length, is produced by meltspinning the molten polymer to give a hollow filament and blowing a cooling gas against the freshly extruded molten filament, the gas being blown from a direction which makes an angle of at least 45 degrees with the direction of extrusion, drawing the filament, and heattreating it at 80-150‹ C. The filaments may be subjected to a mechanical crimping, or be cut into staple lengths before being heattreated in the relaxed state.
