985,295. Spinnerets for hollow artificial filaments. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. April 21, 1961 [April 22, 1960], No. 14464/61. Drawings to Specification. Heading B5B. A spinneret for use in making hollow artificial filaments whereof the cross-section is roughly the shape of a hollow square open at one corner or side contains one or more spinning orifices whereof the cross-section in a plane transverse to the orifice axis is generally the shape of a pentagon of which one side is curved or V-shaped so as to project into the pentagon a distance, measured from a line bridging the curve or V to the point of maximum penetration into the pentagon, which is at least 6% of the diameter of the smallest circle which will circumscribe it. The orifice cross-section may be delineated by five sides whereof a convex side faces the angle of intersection of two substantially rectilinear sides, this angle being less than 180 degrees, and the remaining two sides may be concave in form. The angle of intersection may be between 80 and 150 degrees. The junctions of the sides of the orifice cross-section in this case may all fall on the circumference of a circle of which the concave sides form parts and the radius of curvature of the convex side is between 40 and 200% of the radius of this circle. The area of the cross-section of each orifice may be between 0À006 and 0À02 square millimetres. The junctions of the sides of such an orifice crosssection may fall at the points of a regular pentagon and on the circumference of a circle of 0À08 to 0À22 mm. diameter, a chord across the convex or V-shaped side may be about 59% of said diameter and said side may project into the orifice cross-section about 9% of said diameter. The spinneret may be used for dryspinning a solution of secondary cellulose acetate in acetone and the extruded filaments may be taken up at a draw-down ratio between 0À6 and 2À0.
